Calcium is a major constituent in your marine aquarium with recommended concentrations around 410-450ppm. These levels must be maintained to help with the function of fish, coral and many other wanted inhabitants. Calcium primarily exists in chemical equilibrium between the Calcium ion and Calcium carbonate solid. The reaction: Ca2+(aq) + CO32-(aq)
CaCO3(s) explains this phenomena. If Calcium levels are low then the reaction (above) will push to the left; depleting the amount of Calcium carbonate present in your aquarium. This will result in the decreased growth and repair of many organisms.
